California Flooding Preparation

Anywhere it rains, it can flood. Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future. Flood risk isn't just based on history, it's also based on a number of factors: rainfall, river-flow and tidal-surge data, topography, flood-control measures, and changes due to building and development. With March and April showers around the bend to add to the already wet days in February, the present is as good a time as any to check up on your California home insurance coverage.

While you do that, a pair of lawmakers are pushing for the National Flood Insurance Program to be extended once again. Currently, most California home insurance policies do not cover flooding and this particular legislation allows for the operation of the program , granting businesses and homeowners to purchase flood insurance through their home insurance companies. Unfortunately, the NFIP expires at the end of May.

In a recent letter to Congressional leaders, Senators David Vitter and Jon Tester are calling for lawmakers to take up a bill that would keep the program in operation until at least 2016 to prevent short-term lapses.

"It would be a huge disservice to homebuyers to allow the NFIP to lapse again," Vitter said. "Each time the NFIP approaches its expiration date it causes a great deal of turmoil in the housing market because of the uncertainty surrounding the program, and we can easily prevent this from happening."

Though you may not live in a high-risk area, anyone can be financially vulnerable to floods. People outside of high-risk areas file over 20% of NFIP claims and receive one-third of disaster assistance for flooding. You can check to see if your county participates in the NFIP program by visiting their website, but don't fear if they don't. One of the experienced agents at Roger L.
